Why Trauma Survivors Seek Validation

As trauma survivors, we often seek the opinions of others to validate our self-worth. The sad reality of that getting validation from others is not sustainable and it does not work. If you want happiness in your life it must first come from you. You must also understand that happiness is a fleeting emotion. Like all emotions, it’s best that we allow it to come and go and not try to hold onto it.

How to find a CPTSD Trauma Coach

Many of us have trouble with tapping into our emotional being because it hurts and our first memories of emotion are often painful. However, in order to understand and feel the range of emotions we have to allow ourselves to feel them all. What I mean by that is if you turn off one emotion you also turn off the others. Dissociation happens because it is a survival mechanism for trauma survivors and in order for us to make it we have to shut down. Now that works when we need it but what happens when we no longer do? We bottom "robotic" and "disconnected". It may take you a lifetime to be able to tap into your full range of motions but the best thing that you can do is start with today and whether you are happy, angry, sad, joyful, or whatever that may just allow it to exist even if only for one moment.
